Overview

Overview

I built FitBones from scratch, focusing on bone health prevention for women aged 25-45. Using Design Thinking and the Double Diamond process, I identified a key user need for proactive exercise habits, pivoting the product focus from osteoporosis management to prevention. I employed Nir Eyal’s Hook Model and gamification to foster habit formation, while leveraging Alberto Savoia’s pretotyping techniques to validate the product’s desirability and viability.

The outcome included a 17% conversion rate (5x higher than expected) and a 97% task success rate in usability testing. My holistic approach ensured the product not only met user needs but also aligned with long-term business goals, driving engagement and laying the foundation for scalable growth.

Imagine a strong bridge that looks perfect on the outside but has tiny, hidden cracks inside. Over time, these cracks can cause the bridge to collapse without warning.

Our bones can face a similar fate due to osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones silently.

Lack of awareness

She doesn’t know which workouts are effective for bone strength.

Busy schedule

Her busy work schedule doesn’t leave time for long sessions.

Emily struggles with…

No support system

Her friends don’t prioritize bone health, leaving her to workout alone.

Low motivation

Some days, she just isn’t motivated and ends up procrastinating.

Emily's story in not unique. She represents millions of women who want to prevent osteoporosis but lack the tools and support to do so.

If I had known I was losing bone and needed to start an exercise program to stop it, I would have.

Myself, User Researcher

No specific doctor told me to exercise, but I understood that was part of the whole thing. Especially when I had the osteopenia diagnosis.

Myself, User Researcher

My biggest challenge is working out alone. If I skip the gym in the morning, I keep postponing it and end up not going at all.

Myself, User Researcher

My mother had osteoporosis, but I didn't I didn't think I was even close to the age that I had to start thinking about it.

Myself, User Researcher

The only way I get through rowing sessions is by balancing my phone on the front of the rowing machine and watching some mindless content.

Myself, User Researcher

I like having a buddy. Sometimes my husband will go with me. I got a gym membership that I can bring a guest.

Myself, User Researcher

How might we reduce the barriers to regular exercise for women aged 25-45 to prevent osteoporosis by addressing their lack of awareness, motivation, and difficulty forming consistent routines, through a personalized, educational, and community-driven solution?

That's where FitBones comes in! A user-friendly mobile app designed by Preethi to tackle these challenges. It’s more than just a fitness app—it’s a habit-building tool grounded in Self-Determination Theory, aiming to foster both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
